The early years...

Hale Manufacturing began trading in 1953 as GN Hale & Son at premises in Wingate, Lower Hutt under the guidance of George Hale. The first major clients to come on board were Griffins and Tip Top Ice Cream who we manufactured Truck Bodies for.

The company also specialised in general sheetmetal work and freezing work contracts, with a team of installers carrying out work across the region.

Television New Zealand became a regular client who had trucks fabricated by Hale and removable outside broadcast bodies were designed and produced also.

Wormald joined the quickly growing client base and Hale was able to demonstrate its expertise in the fabrication sector by producing some specialised fire appliances for them.

The 1960's...Auckland comes on board...

With the continued growth of the Wellington operation, the decision was made to set up a branch in Auckland in 1960. A premise in Industry Road, Penrose was found and the production of truck bodies was set up in the same vein as was occurring in Wellington.

Wanting a larger factory more fit for the purpose, the Wellington operation moved premises to Marine Parade in Petone in the 1960's.

The 1970's...The birth of Toilet Partitions...

An opportunity was seen to expand into an area within the building industry that we could apply our diverse manufacturing skills and capabilities to. Auckland and Wellington set about the manufacture, supply and installation of toilet cubicles to commercial building projects and this new sector of the business grew very quickly. Later, a fellow brand in Dominion Light Alloys was purchased and became part of the Hale brand.

The mid 1970's saw us pick up a Canadian modular design of aluminium truck body - the Huron. This body offered lighter weight and higher strength, the same attributes that it still holds today.

The 1980's...Motor Bodies in Christchurch...

In the late 1980's, Modern Motor Bodies in Christchurch was purchased, a company that also specialised in the manufacture of truck bodies. The same model that was proving successful in Wellington and Auckland was established and the Christchurch sector of truck bodies prospered until it was sold in the early 2000's to Dick Bowden, who still trades the company as Hale Manufacturing.

The 1990's...Auckland on the move...Vehicle Accessories begin...

In 1990, the decision was made to disband the truck body manufacture in Auckland to concentrate solely on the Toilet Partition side of the business and a new premise was found in Harris Rd, East Tamaki and later in 1995 Ra Ora Drive where the company was based until 2006.

In Wellington, as an expansion of the truck body manufacture, the decision was made to branch into light commercial vehicle accessories. This primarily involved the installation of canopies initially and further expanding into the huge range of options that are offered in Auckland and Wellington today.

The 2000's...Vehicle Accessories in Auckland... Toilet Partitions in Wellington get its own premises...

In 2005, the motor division was re-introduced in Auckland with the employment of Steve Newland to run the division. Since the inception of this division back into Auckland, it has prospered into a key division of the company in the present day.

With the need for more factory space to accommodate all 3 divisions, plans were drawn up for the expansion of the Port Rd premises. Unfortunately, due to resource consent issues surrounding the number of carparks available this expansion did not go ahead and the Toilet Partition division re-located to its present day Pharazyn St factory.
